A Day At The Taste

Yesterday I took a day off from work and headed into the city to graze it up at the Taste of Chicago and to see CSI-The Experience and the recently updated U-505 Submarine Exhibit at The Museum of Science and Industry. The exhibits were pretty cool and the food at "the taste" was pure gluttony! We tore it up from the floor up and we almost threw up! While grazing I ran into Scarlett, a co-worker from Mexico City who I haven't seen in like over 2 years. She was in town visiting her boyfriend. What a small world! Last night I met up with my BFF Mark and some of his friends to celebrate Anthony's birthday! It was a lot of fun. Anthony was obsessed with this rubber ducky hanging on the wall which he managed to get and is seen above in all the pictures. LOL Good times! Happy 4th ya'll!

What Cicadas Have Taught Us

I'm sorry to say that the Cicadas are pretty much gone now. For me, the great Cicada invasion of 2007 was truly an amazing event to witness and experience. Who knows where I'll be in 17 years but if I'm not in the Chicago area, I will make it a point to come and party with these these amazing creatures. Anyway, I also wanted to share this interesting article I found in the Chicago Tribune on what the Cicadas have taught or can teach us humans on life lessons. Enjoy.

Cicada Sounds

Brian and I took our bikes out for a spin yesterday. We wanted to go see the Cicadas one last time before they all died. We started heading east along the Great Western Trail towards the heavily infested areas of Lombard and Elmhurst, IL. Once we got to Lombard we were, or least I was, in awe. Surrounding us were hundreds if not thousands of Cicadas singing in the bushes and trees. At the same time there was also this eerie high pitched "hissing" sound in the background coming from the little Cicadas as well. It sounded like a bunch of flying saucers from those old Lost In Space episodes. It was a very surreal experience. Above are two clips I recorded during our bike ride. You can hear the "hissing" sound of thousands of Cicadas in the above left video (Notice the wave of singing Cicadas at second 17 coming into full force). The above right video shows a close up of a few hundred singing Cicadas on a small tree in Elmhurst, IL.

Hiking On Kelleys Island

I finally got a chance to go through my pics I took on Kelleys Island last weekend. Renee from Didymops invited Brian and I to come along on a nature hike with her and friends from The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Despite the extreme heat and humidity it turned out to be a very fun hike! We did a bit of bird banding, searched for fossils, and got to see Kelleys Island's famous Glacial Grooves. Afterwards, Jay, Larry, Judy, Brian, and I headed over to the Village Pump for some brewskies. That was a hoot! Below are a few pics of the things I saw during the hike. Cicadas Invade Elmhurst

As promised, below are some pictures of the periodical cicadas Joe, Samantha, Tyler, Isabelle and I chased down in the streets of Elmhurst . Thanks go to Sue Campbell for being so kind in inviting us over her home to take pictures of the little buggers. Cicadas Emerging In Elmhurst

Yesterday after work I got a call from Samantha and Joe telling me about some cicadas emerging from the ground in Elmhurst. Being the enthusiastic Cicada Chaser that I am, I grabbed my camera and drove to Sam and Joe's house. From there we drove into the southern part of town and the above is what I captured. The video on the left is a newly emerged Cicada Nymph crawling up the bark of a tree. The video on the right is a video of a Cicada that has just moulted. I will post more pics later.

Welcome Back Cicada

Yes, the Periodical Cicadas are back after 17 years in the ground. I have not seen one in my area yet but this is supposedly the day they start coming out of the ground by the thousands. Lui5.com is on Cicada Alert. I do not want to miss this great insect like I did back in 1990. For some reason the Cicadas did not emerge no where near my home in Waukegan. Anyway, I will keep you posted if and when I start seeing those darn little critters.

Las Vegas - Day 4

Our last couple of days in Vegas was spent gambling the rest of our savings away up and down the strip. I was $60 under after everything was done. We also visited old Las Vegas and to our surprise the Pride Parade was going on. Below are some of the pics of our last two days in Vegas. Las Vegas - Day 3

Today we decided to drive to Red Rock Canyon which is just 30 minutes outside of Las Vegas. The park is famous for its huge red sandstone peaks. Paul, Rick and I did a little hiking and rock climbing while we were there. We were able to spot an endangered desert tortoise as well as an Uinta Chipmunk trying to keep cool in the near 100 degree heat by laying its belly on the cool shaded sand. Below are some of the pictures I took in and around Red Rock Canyon.

Las Vegas - Day 2

Paul and I became a little ill today after gorging ourselves at the buffet at the Bellagio. The bloody bison steak just wasn't sitting right if you know what I mean. Dont' get me wrong, the buffet at the Bellagio is fantastic but stay away from the bloody steak. After a couple of hours our stomachs settled and we went out and grazed it up some more! Eating in Vegas is awesome!

Las Vegas - Day 1

Paul, Rick and I went to go see our dear friend Peg this morning. She tricked us... I mean... she sold us a couple of timeshares a few years back and wanted to show us the many exciting things that was happening around the strip. She was actually telling us the truth about the huge resort that was going to be built across from our building. The new City Center pictured above is just one of the few buildings/resorts being built up and down the strip. City Center is expected to open to the public in late 2009.

Trip To Vegas

I flew over to Vegas last night to celebrate Rick's birthday. I took this picture of the southern strip from the bar at the top our hotel. I just love Vegas! I also want to send some "birfday" love to Rick who turns the big 4-0. Happy Birthday Rick!

Poop and Pee 101

For all you folks (you know who you are) that love to talk about poop and pee, this clip is for you. Straight from Japan, a toilet training video for youngsters. It's kinda weird at first but towards the end, you will find yourself singing and humming along to the catchy poop and pee song! Pooping and peeing can be fun!

Mexican Idol

The Mexican Idol finale was held last night at the Fox N' Hound in Arlington Heights. The final two contestants gave it their all in front of a jam packed audience. Rodrigo gave a superb rendition of "Up On The Roof" by the Drifters while Francisco gave a nearly flawless performance of "She Will Be Loved" by Maroon 5. America, who will be the next Mexican Idol? Chicago Scores US 2016 Olympics Bid

Chicago beat L.A. in becoming the U.S. applicant city for the 2016 Games. The next big hurdle now is to convince the world to bring the Games here. [Article]

Snow In April?!?

Yeah, so I woke up this morning to this! Crazy! It's going to be one heck of a commute! I'm thinking sick day today (sniffle sniffle). Anyway, I guess I should feel lucky that we didn't get a storm like the one that hit Cleveland over the weekend. Didymops reported up to 2 feet of snow in her hood! And by "snow in the hood" I'm talking about the white stuff that falls from the sky, umkayyy!

Planet Earth

You know, I can't even explain how hooked I am with this new series by the Discovery Channel/BBC called Planet Earth. I've spent my entire morning watching re-runs from last Sundays premiere. And the show is like butter if you have HDTV. It's that good! The series continues tonight so check it out because if you don't, you're missing out on something really amazing and beautiful!
